1 - Preparing the soil
Design your beds and berms to suit your fancy or budget using only natural
Test the soil each day. When it can be turned without sticking to the tines
is the day to amend it.
Fall and winter are the best times to turn that 'ol Gumbo clay and other
soil types into black gold.
Remove grass sod, weeds and other debris from the area to be improved.
With a spading fork, loosen the soil to a depth of about 10 to 12 inches.
Break up clods larger than a softball with the spading fork tines.
Remove turned soil and set it aside to be used later in the soil
With a fork spade, turn undisturbed sub soil to a depth of the fork tines
(if possible) and loosen large clods, but do not remove. Level area with a
